Desperately seeking recognition in a war-ravaged Egypt, Radames hopes to be chosen as army commander. Envisioning a glorious victory, he dreams of freeing his beloved Aida, an Ethiopian slave, from Amneris, the King’s daughter. His fantasy is seemingly fulfilled when the King announces Radames’ appointment as commander; the Egyptian army prepares for war.

On the beach in Ceylon the pearl fishers gather. Some prepare their nets for work; while others dance and drink. The fishers must choose a leader and they immediately choose Zurga. They joyously await the arrival of the priestess whose prayers will protect against the seasons storms. Another fisherman, Nadir, arrives and greets his old friend Zurga.

Tamino, a Prince, is wandering through a strange, deserted country. He is pursued by a monstrous serpent and narrowly eludes death when he is saved at the last moment by The Three Ladies of the Queen. The Three Ladies go to inform the Queen, who is impressed by the handsome youth. The Queen sends him a portrait of her daughter, Pamina.

In 1854 Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act which provided that the question of slavery in those territories was to be decided by their residents. This precipitated a proto-civil war between North and South, both sides sending men and money to Kansas to swing the balance of national power. The South was in control of the federal government.
