At Ease with Opera - John Adams' Nixon in China: A Composer's Perspective
On Monday, February 20, 7:00 p.m. in the Kauffman Foundation (4801 Rockill Road, KCMO) Mara Gibson, local composer and director of the Academy at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, will discuss the music of composer John Adams in a program titled: “John Adams’ Nixon in China: A Composer’s Perspective.” She will be assisted by vocalist Stephanie Meyer.

At Ease with Opera - Nixon in China
On Wednesday, February 22, 7:00 p.m. at the Kauffman Foundation (4801 Rockill Road, KCMO) Megan Greene, the Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Kansas and an Associate Professor of Modern Chinese History, will present a talk about China at the time of Nixon’s visit. This talk will focus on the propaganda of the Cultural Revolution period, with a particular emphasis on revolutionary operas and ballets such as the ballet which is shown in the opera, and will include video excerpts.

“The week that changed the world” - Richard Nixon. The Lyric Opera returns to contemporary repertoire with prolific American composer John Adams’ hailed opera about Nixon’s historic journey to Red China in 1972. This unprecedented trip by a sitting U.S. President to China, with the hope of meeting Chairman Mao and creating peace, has forever changed the political landscape between the countries. Metropolitan Opera stars James Maddalena and Richard Paul Fink return fresh from their run in the production as Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger.

Figaro, the local lovable barber and jack-of-all-trades, helps Count Almaviva win the heart of the beautiful Rosina. Despite a few laughable mishaps, Figaro is able to distract Rosina’s elderly suitor by masquerading the Count in numerous comical costumes. This hilarious masterpiece starring Sandra Piques Eddy features an overture and aria so famous that even Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd couldn’t resist singing “Fi-ga-ro, Fi-ga-ro, Fi-ga-ro.”
