Children's Chorus Auditions

Auditions for Lyric Opera main stage production Children’s Choruses are held on a per need basis. Audition information will be listed below if a Children’s Chorus is needed for a production.  Interested children are encouraged to attend Lyric Opera camps to ensure inclusion in all Children’s Chorus audition opportunities.

Dead Man Walking Children’s Chorus

Lyric Opera of Kansas City welcomes children in grades 3-12 to audition for the main stage children’s chorus for our upcoming production of Dead Man Walking.  We are seeking 16 young singer/actors with talent and exceptional emotional maturity.  The boys should have unchanged voices. The children’s chorus portray young people from a poor neighborhood in Chicago in an after school program being led by Sr. Helen Prejean.  This piece deals with mature themes, and would be rated R for violence and brief nudity.  Young people wishing to audition should read information about the production with their parents/guardians.  Further information will then be sent to those who inquire for audition materials.

Performances will be held on the Muriel McBride Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.  Performance dates are March 4, 8, 10 and 12, 2017. Click here to view a rehearsal schedule (subject to change.)  Chorus members must commit to the entire rehearsal schedule – no absences are allowed. Dead Man Walking will be sung in English, with English subtitles.  This chorus is not paid.

What to prepare:  The audition material will be the children’s chorus music from Act 1, scene 1.  No other music will be heard for these auditions.

To receive further information about auditions, email Linda Ade Brand at LABrand@kcopera.org.  You will then be sent specific information about the production, an audition and parental consent form, a scan of the music to be sung at the audition and a measurement sheet for you to fill out.  Please note that our casting choices are often dictated by the costume sizes available. We must confirm with our costume coordinator that we have a costume to fit each singer.  This information will not be available until January; consequently, we will be unable to announce our casting until those questions are resolved.  Thank you in advance for your patience.

We offer three preparation classes at the Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building, 712 E. 18th St., KCMO 64108:

Audition Times:

Monday, December 12, 2016 from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m.
Tuesday, December 13, 2016 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building, 712 E. 18th St., KCMO 64108 – Corner of 18th and Charlotte.

What to bring:  Bring the audition and parental consent form signed by both parents, the completed measurement sheet, a picture of yourself (for reference only – it will not be used for publicity) and a resume if you have one.  There will be space on the audition form to list music and stage experiences if you do not currently have a performance resume.
