Words + Music

Photo by Aaron LindbergCombining innovative young writers,
composers and singers

Words + Music continues in its second year, hosted by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City Education Department.  We bring together the WORDS from five young writers in the Coterie Theatre’s Young Playwright’s Roundtable and the MUSIC from five area composers associated with UMKC Composition Department.  The new works are then performed by singer/actors active in the Lyric programs – and in two cases by the composers themselves. Robert Pherigo leads the coaching sessions and is our pianist. This year we will feature the writers reading their texts followed by their sung versions.  There will be three presentations of our works- in-progress before their official premier at the KC Fringe Festival.

Each new work was presented in a masterclass with Oscar, Pulitzer, and Grammy-award winning composer John Corigliano and renowned composer Mark Adamo, whose works include Little Women and Lysistrata.
