Kansas City Lyric Opera Guild

The Lyric Opera Guild is a social and networking group of men and women who attend the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and enjoy the camaraderie of others who share their interest in Opera. If you love opera, are new to opera, want to know more about opera – particularly those performed by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City – then the Guild is the place for you.

Throughout the year we participate in social and educational activities designed to expand our friendships and our knowledge of opera.

Guild Programs & Benefits Include:

At Ease With Opera. An award-winning program featuring knowledgeable and entertaining speakers. These programs are generally held on three Mondays prior to each opera. The programs often revolve around the upcoming production but may also deal with a general topic in the field of opera. These talks are free to the public. Guild members and their guests are encouraged to attend. View currently scheduled At Ease programs.

Opera Previews (also known as Pre-Opera Talks). Organized and presented by the Guild, these previews begin one hour before curtain time for each Opera in the Muriel Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The previews are entertaining and offer a wealth of background about the composer, context and history of the opera. The Previews are free to anyone who has purchased a ticket for the performance.

Guild Room. The Guild Room is open prior to each performance and during the intermissions. The Guild Room is reserved for Guild members and their guests to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or soda and light refreshments and mingle with their fellow opera lovers.

Trips. The Guild organizes and sponsors domestic and international trips to experience performances in many of the famous opera houses worldwide. These trips are extremely popular and often sold out. Our trip destinations have included New York, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington domestically, plus Toronto, London, Paris, Vienna, Salzburg, Rome, Venice, Verona, Munich, Sydney, New Zealand and many other places overseas. Our trips are inexpensive compared to those run by profit-making tour companies. Backstage tours, opera performances, exclusive hotels and restaurants offer a one of a kind opera experience!

Social events. Several social events are scheduled throughout the season for Guild members and their guests to enjoy food, beverages, entertainment and camaraderie with their fellow opera lovers and opera cast members.

Restaurant discounts. The Guild Membership Card lists several popular Kansas City restaurants which offer year-round discounts to Guild members. Just present your membership card and save 10 or 15% on your meal!

Hospitality Program. Guild members have an opportunity to host visiting artists who are performing in the operas. Hosting may include having lunch or dinner with the artist, showing them around Kansas City, or just being available if the artists have questions. This gives you a great opportunity to meet the artists and to provide Kansas City hospitality.

Metropolitan Opera District Auditions. The Guild supports the local Metropolitan Opera District Auditions with staffing and financial support. Every third year the Regional Auditions are also held in Kansas City and the Guild supports these auditions as well. Guild members have the privilege of staffing the event, listening to a day of great opera, and attending an award banquet with the audition winners entertaining.

Speaker’s Bureau. The Guild provides program speakers for civic, community and other groups throughout the year. Entertaining programs with musical excerpts are tailored to the individual organization and can address individual operas the Lyric Opera is performing, or they can consist of an overview of opera or information about Kansas City Lyric Opera.  Contact us to book a Speakers Bureau presentation.

Opera Volunteers International. The Guild is a member of Opera Volunteers International and several Guild members have been active on the OVI board of directors. For information about OVI and the services it provides to opera volunteers everywhere, please click here.

Lyric Opera of Kansas City financial support. The Guild provides significant financial support to Lyric Opera of Kansas City each season. Your membership and participation in fund raising efforts help make this gift possible.

Patrons/Donors benefits. Special benefits are available to Patrons and Donors. See the Guild Membership Benefits form.
